ReplyDeleteJason I liked this lesson. It didn't take long and not only were your instructions clear and easy to follow, I was actually interested in reading the article and the questions followed the article perfectly. I also liked that you added the YouTube clip. If I had to suggest one thing I think it would be to have the students watch the clip once before reading the article and once after and then compare answers. Overall, good work man.

ReplyDeleteJason
I thought that this was a very good idea for a lesson. Having the students answer questions first allows them to become engaged in what they are learning. Both the article and the video that you selected were awesome. The article was interesting and I even told my roommates some of the statistics like how much the companies spend on advertising. The video was also good because it allows the students to see real advertisments that are out there in front of them now. I thought that they were funny but they were appropriate. The two suggestions that I have for you would be to have a discussion session in class about the videos and article so the students can explain what they saw and why they think they are targeted. The other suggestion I have is that some of the questions do not apply when we have to answer them the first time so I would remove those and then add them when you ask us to answer questions after reading the article.
Nice job I would use this lesson in my class.
I really liked the lesson you chose for your topic. An interesting article like this not only keeps your students interested in the topic but also does a good job of educating them. This a serious topic to be teaching I like the approach that you took. I think that this assignment doesn't take to long and gets your point across what you want them to be aware of. I think that this would be a good first activity to introduce this topic. Nice Job.

ReplyDeleteI think that this is a good assignment and I like how you did the questions before and after. However, I think you need to reword/rewrite the instructions because some of the questions clearly can't be answered until after reading the article. So, maybe give them questions 1-5. Then read article before answering those same questions again as well as 6-10. Definitely a good intro lesson. I would focus a lot on the question about your response being different had you not read the article. It is important for the students to realize why they are doing the activity. You know that many of them no the negative effects of drinking and that ads are targeted at them. However, highlighting the the fact that they should think differently about the ads after the article is important.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason my login to docstoc is not working so here is my response:
Before
1. Alcohol is safe and makes you look sexy. Alcohol is the life of the party and makes it easier to talk to people.
2. Music videos, billboards, music, signs, pictures, coasters and other merchandise at bars and stores.
3. Impairment, hangovers, liver damage
4. Sex appeal, coolness factor/bandwagon, music jingles
5. Young population of men and women from late teen years and up
After
1. Alcohol is magical, fun, sexy, desirable and harmless
2. Movies, music,
3. murder, suicide, car accidents, unemployment and child abuse
4. What strategies are used in alcohol ads to sell us products?
5. Problem drinkers and young people are its primary targets.
6. they only want people who already drink to switch to their brand and to drink it in moderation
7. If all drinkers did drink moderately, alcohol companies would lose nearly half the income earned from sales of beer, wine and spirits.
8. The primary purpose of the mass media is to deliver audiences to advertisers
9. The ads promote other things besides drinking like sports, women and magazines. This makes people believe that alcohol is a good thing to do during or with all these activities.
10. I don’t believe there are any solid solutions in this article other than to be informed about alcohol ads.
1. I thought that some of them were kind of funny. However, a few of them would be inappropriate to be on television or anywhere that young children might hear or see them
2. My understanding of the commercials was the same as if I hadn’t read the article, but obviously my response to them is a little different because of the ideas that the article has me thinking about.
3. I remember seeing a few of those ads. Other ones I have never seen before.

ReplyDeleteI really liked the lesson because it gives the students the chance to see what they know about alcohol ads before the article. Then it allows the students to see what they were uneducated about which can really drive the point home. I also liked the video at the end because it showed many commercials that have been shown on TV for the students to analyze and relate to. Hopefully when the students go home they see one of those advertisements and can be reminded of their lesson.
ReplyDelete*** i am having trouble posting my document so i try again soon

ReplyDeleteI like the lesson, it was a great way t learn about alcohol and media awareness. the article was very helpful and straight forward. the last video part was a great way to end it and see what you just learned in a real life example while the knowledge was still fresh. Good job.
I really liked this assignment! It was creative and different. I liked how you did the questions answering them based off of what the students know and then comparing it to the article. Also, I liked how interactive it was and it really would show the students how knowlagable they are. At the same time the obtain more knowlege than what they previously new. Finally, i think that for the videos it would have been interesting to see the answers compared like the other questions were. Other than that I thought it was really good!
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome lesson. It really engages students in learning and also seeing how much the students already know. Having them read the article to learn more info is great. Allowing them to watch a funny video about the advertisments is a good way to end it. It's also a good idea for them to apply the info they have learned it and look at the ads in a different way.

Have alcohol ads show negative sides of drinking
Reflection:
I feel that is very disturbing how misleading alcohol commercials are. They make it seem like if you buy their product that you will end up like the people on the commercial. They only show the bright side of drinking and make it seem like everyone wants to drink. This is misleading because everyone knows that alcohol can bring on problems. The problem with the ads is that they make consumers forget about the consequences. It would be as if a birth control pill commercial promoted sex without the use of a condom.
It kept saying "conversion failed" so i just posted it here

ReplyDeleteSorry I thought I had posted this earlier, but I guess I forgot.
ReplyDeleteThis assignment was a very good idea. I liked how it had many different parts and incorporated many different types of media. Some of the questions listed before we read the article probably should have been placed in a different section of questions to answer. Other than that I really enjoyed the assignment, I also definitely found it to be an eye opener, especially to teens who are not always exposed to this type of education.
